There is no better way to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season (yes,  it’s only mid-November,  I know,  I know!)  than with a cup of spicy mulled wine.

Oh wait. Yes there is.

Several cups of it.

Plus mince pies and candy canes.

And London first Mulled Wine Festival, organised by Yelp London, has it all and then some more,  making it the best thing that could have happened to your weekend.

The best night in with #YelpBigNightIn

I’m the biggest home-buddy there ever was. Sure I’m always up for dinner in a nice restaurant, or a few drinks with friends, but my favourite nights are usually the ones spent at home, curled up on the sofa watching TV.

The only problem being that that ideal scenario often ends up not being that idyllic a scenario since life very often comes inbetween my (admittedly lazy) plans and reality. Laundry, flat cleaning, cooking… There’s so much to be done!

But last Friday was different thanks to Yelp’s Big Night In. All I had to do was come home and relax as everything else had been taking care of for me.

When I came back home that evening, on-demand cleaning app Hassle had already made sure my flat was shining-clean and my laundry had been picked up by the newly-launched Laundrapp. No chores for me then!

And there was wine, carefully selected and delivered to my door by advisor-extraordinaire Mr Vine.

Mr Vine, London's new sommelier app! | Cake + WhiskyI was really impressed with the app, which promises to find you wine you love, no matter what your criteria (style, price, country of origine…) are.

#YelpBigNightIn | Food from Jubo via Deliveroo | Cake + WhiskyFor some reason, I also ended up eating chips with chopsticks that night… (I blame the wine!)

Having wolfed down our dinner, we had a few more glasses of wine and chatted happily until one of us (me) starting to have some dessert cravings…

Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with Yelp

It seems pizza is always better when you get it from outside (as opposed from making it at home). Or is it just me? Either way, I was determined to get to the bottom of it (and hopefully learn a few tricks along the way)!

So last week, I joined a group of overexcited Yelpers (because PIZZA!) for a pizza masterclass at Pizza Rossa.
Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpI was a bit early, so I walk around Leadenhall Market for a while and took in the views (did I ever tell you about this weird obsession of mine with The City’s buildings?) before heading to Pizza Rossa. “Passion by the slice” the sign said. Good sign (geddit?). I believe people who love what they do always do it better. Time to taste-test my theory (and my pizza-making skills, obviously!). Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpEverybody was handed glasses of wine (when in Italy, party like the Italians!) and we got stuck in. After being told about how Pizza Rossa all started out and being promised we were going to make the lightest pizza dough of all times, it was time to get our hands dirty!Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpAs for all good things, it started with flourCake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpTrying really hard the urger to start a flour fight there!

Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpSofar, so good. But then we added yeast, and that’s when it all got a bit lot more… sticky!Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpResulting in me having to go halfsies with my partner, whose dough was too dry, for the two of us to have more managable balls of dough! From then on, our newly separated siamese pizza dough babies behaved (we were both really proud)!

All it took to finish the prep was a bit of oil and some salt. And a lot of arm workout! Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpCake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpCake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpAnd then some more to roll it all out!Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpAfter this, there was A LOT of pizza (and the dough was indeed very light, which might have led me to eat even more than I intended to) and quite abit of wine too (the Italians sure know how to party!). And of course, that’s when my phone decided to stop working. Which might be for the best as you won’t be able to tell how many slices I’ve had…

I have no picture to prove how delicious everything was, but take my words on it and next time you’re in the City for lunch (or dinner, or anytime inbetween really!), just go get yourself a few slices (my favourite was the prosciutto & butternut squash one!)!

I, however, went home with my own little pizza dough ball (which wasn’t little at all!). So I had to make more pizza (oh no!). And I can tell you, making pizza with your fingers crossed (hoping for it to be as delicious as the ones I had the day before) is not easy!Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpEither I was lucky or I’m some sort of pizza genius because the dough ended up being so fluffy and soft! Or maybe I was just taught really well! Rolling it was a bit challenging but really fun since air bubbles were desperately trying to kind their way out!

The pros at Pizza Rossa advised to follow several steps to bake your pizza. First you roll the dough out and bake it for about 4 minutes at a really high temperature (250 °C).
Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpThen you add tomato sauce and bake it for another 4 min.Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpAfter which you should get something looking a bit like this!Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpAll that’s left to do afterwards is to pile your toppings high and bake for a further 2-5 minutes (we went for red onions, red peppers, chorizo dice, basil and sausage leftovers. And LOADS of mozzarella!).Cake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpCake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpCake + Whisky | Pizza Masterclass at Pizza Rossa with YelpAnd tadaaaah! Does that look like a majestic homemade pizza or what?

I definitely have Luca & Corrado from Pizza Rossa to thank for it! Now to see if I can do as well by myself…

Yelp’s After Hours Bubble Tea Event at Bubbleology | All the bubbles! | Notting Hill

One of the reasons I love London so much is that there’s always something new to explore. Which is closely related to one of the most challenging things about this city: finding a way to keep track of what’s going on!!

For a few weeks now, I’ve been trying out the Yelp app, which is the perfect pocket companion to any London explorer. It allows you to keep track of the places you’ve visited (thanks to the check-in option), give you the opportunity to read reviews before you pick a place to go out for dinner (bye-bye dodgy restaurants!) and even to write some yourself. Basically, it’s like the whole of London has suddently became your best friend and wants to give you tips about what you should check out (or not).

Even better yet, from time to time, Yelp actually organises events for you to meet other members! So on Friday, I grabbed one of my very best friends (who was visiting for the weekend) and we headed to Bubbleology in Notting Hill to the Yelp Afterhour Bubble Tea event!Cake + Whisky | Bubbleology Notting Hill Bubble TeaWe were greated by a wacky lab in the window… Mad scientist themed party? YES please!!Cake + Whisky | Bubble Tea at Bubbleology Notting Hill Cake + Whisky | Bubble Tea at Bubbleology Notting Hill After taking a good look at all the scienc-ey artefacts (and clicking a few pictures of us lounging around…), it was time for the bubble madness to begin!Cake + Whisky | Bubble Tea at Bubbleology Notting Hill First up, pick up some tea from the very long list of flavours availables (here, apple-tea-ni or strawberry daiqui-tea). Add some chewy tapioca bubbles (they’re the dark ones and the most traditional topping) for good measure. Cake + Whisky | Bubbleology Notting Hill Bubble TeaNext up: move on to the less traditional, much more colourful side of things. Go crazy and add popping bubbles (they quite literally explode when you bite into them, it’s really fun!) and/or jelly bits… Better get a variety of colours and tastes too (you know, in the name of research…).Cake + Whisky | Bubbleology Notting Hill Bubble TeaTadaaaaaah, you’re really to go! All that’s left to do is find the classiest way to slurp those bubbles up! (I still haven’t quite found out, but I’m working on it!!)Cake + Whisky | Bubble Tea at Bubbleology Notting Hill Cake + Whisky | Bubble Tea at Bubbleology Notting Hill If you need a little snack, Bubbleology has you covered too as they also serve delicious macaroons that are just as good as the one you can buy in the most luxurious of places! Except that they’re much cheaper (yay to that!!).
Cake + Whisky | Bubble Tea at Bubbleology Notting Hill Mingle with other Yelpers for a little while…Cake + Whisky | Bubble Tea at Bubbleology Notting Hill Grab another cup of bubble tea. Repeat. It’ll all make for a very nice night indeed.

What? Bubbly drinks in pretty much any flavour you can think of. Bubbleology doesn’t usually serve the cocktail versions of their teas (but I really really wish they will in the future as I fell in love with the strawberry daiqui-tea and our romance simply can’t end up that abruptly… Please help?)
