Garlic Butter Mushroom Buns

I’ve had a bottle of Sriracha in my food cupboard for a long, long time. And up until a few weeks ago, I didn’t use a drop of it.

I simply couldn’t see why people around the world were obsessed with Sriracha.

And then one day, we run out of Tabasco, and I was too lazy to peel and grate garlic to make aioli, so I just mixed Sriracha with some mayo to dip some crudités in and all of a sudden, I got it.

Sriracha mayo is simply the bomb.

Since then, I’ve been my basic obsessed self. And I used Srirach on any- and everything I could get away with.

Chips, of course, but also all sort of raw veggies. Plus steamed cauliflower, grilled broccoli, burgers, and, most recently, these garlic butter mushroom buns.

An excellent alternative to meat burgers, vegetarian mushroom buns are simplicity at its very best.

They’re great for every meal, be it breakfast (it’s divine with a poached egg added in), a quick lunch or dinner, so make sure you make ‘shroom for them on your table!

Copenhagen best Smørrebrød at Aamanns

On our second day in Denmark, we had our hearts set on trying out the traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches, so we scouted the city in search of Copenhagen best Smørrebrød.

Word on the street is that they’re to be found at Aamanns, a modern Danish open sandwich deli and restaurant.

So off to the western-most part of Copenhagen we trotted… to discover one of the prettiest restaurants I’ve ever set foot in!

Miles away from your usual British ‘deli’, simply decorated yet refined and elegant, Aamanns is a textbook example of brilliant Nordic design.

The natural, no-nonsense decor mirrors the restaurant’s philosophy of good, simple Danish cuisine perfectly.

If at night, the menu is more elaborate, at lunchtime, Aamanns is all about Smørrebrød, the traditional open sandwich on rye bread.

Starting things off the traditional way with Fried herring with smoke, elderflower vinegar, smoked cheese, radishes and hay ash.

A modern take on the classic, this first taste of Smørrebrød highlighted Aamanns’ beautiful, malty sourdough rye bread perfectly.

Cold smoked salmon and summer salad with dill, pickled cucumber, chives and wheat croutons was a more usual combination for our non-Nordic palates.

A bit of a Nordic take on a lox & cream cheese bagel if you will, only far lighter and much more delicate than the New York original!

New potatoes with pepper mayonnaise, weeds, chives, leek ash and crisps.

With soft potatoes, crumbly rye bread, creamy mayo, crunchy pickled onion & crispy fried potato bits, the easy-to-overlook vegetarian option was an textural masterpiece, and also a very strong choice taste-wise (if you like celery, that is…).

Last but not least, a much less vegetarian-friendly option: Beef Tartare with blackberries, tarragon emulsion, shallots and rye crumb.

A little bit of a Franco-Nordic fusion, and a very successful one at that! And what a beauty!

The same could be sayed about dessert, a Strawberry eclair with vanilla cream and strawberry granita.

The chou itself was okay, but the vibrant granite and the light-as-air vanilla cream were what truly made the dish.

… and made me struggle not to lick the plate clean!

All finished off the Danish way with a few cups of excellent strong black coffee.

All in all, muck to loaf at Aamans, which explains its popularity with locals and visitors alike, so make sure you book ahead as it’d really be a shame for you to miss out on the best (Copenhagen) thing since sliced bread!

Cheesy date at Melt Room

Nothing beats a cheesy date.

By which I don’t mean an amalgam of all the cliches you see in movies.

Nop, no red roses, candlelit restaurants or gondola ride for me. Instead, loads and loads of melted cheese and bread.

Melt Room {Restaurant review} | Cake + Whisky

Melt Room is London’s first grilled cheese sandwich shop.

Yes, you read that right. They only serve grilled cheese sandwiches.

Service is friendly and really quick.

Those guys sure understand that cheese cravings don’t wait.

The cheese fries arrived first.

Crispy, yet soft in the middle, and covered in the most sinful puddle of cheese sauce, they were simply delicious.

And even more so when combined with the homemade relish (that thing is gold, do get some!)

The Mac ‘n’ Cheese is a must-order.

Golden toasted sourdough bread, sandwiching a generous serving of Mac ‘n’ Cheese (with added chorizo because YOLO).

Come on, you know you want to.

Or will it be the Pastrami (with mushrooms, horseradish, red leicestershire and cheddar)?

Market Porter, Battersea

Those last few weeks, I had been working really hard on blog scheduling, trying to make sure I balance content to make sure you guys don’t end up reading 7 restaurant reviews one week, and then none for weeks.

It was all going well, but then I visited the newly-opened Market Porter in Battersea and everything tumbled down.

Forget being organised and planning content ahead, there was no way I was keeping this one from you for one second!

Market Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + Whisky

Nestled in the still-being-built Embassy Gardens luxury development right by the river, finding Market Porter is still a bit of a challenge…

Market Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + Whisky

But it’s well worth the effort as Market Porter is the cutest café / deli I have ever seen.

Worthy of my Paris’ favourites!

Market Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + WhiskyMarket Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + Whisky

Quite small, but so very charming and welcoming, just like the people running it!

People who love wine, cheese and charcuterie are always the best people anyway.

Market Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + Whisky

And true to its roots (Market Porter is the first off-line venture of Meatporter.com, famous for delivering exceptionally high-quality meat cuts right to your door), Market Porter focuses on the quality of ingredients.

Only the very best, carefully sourced with both taste and ethics in mind, is to be found on the shelves.

The artisan deli selection of course includes some of Meat Porter‘s gorgeous own produce, usually only available through their website.

Along with a fine selection of wine, coffee, cheese as well as other high-quality British food and drink products.

Market Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + Whisky

You can of course take all those beautiful things home and turn them into the most beautiful of picnics.

Or you can turn to the man behind the bar and trust him to come up with something wonderful.

Market Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + Whisky

Like this Green Peppercorn wild boar salami on sourdough with spinach and roasted red peppers.

Market Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + Whisky

Crunchy toasted sourdough, spread with a touch of the very best mayo, fresh baby spinach leaves, paper-thin, smoky and delicate salami, soft peppers, simply drizzled in fragrant olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt, this beauty shines by its simplicity.

But when everything that goes into a dish is that good, nothing more is needed to create something absolutely stellar.

Market Porter, Battersea, London | Cake + Whisky

Both picture and taste-perfect and one of the best lunches I’d had in a while.

So if you happen to be in the area, go give them a go (and get me some of this salami when you’re at it!).

Katz’s Deli NYC

I truly believe that the best things in life are the ones you don’t plan too much for. And our first meal in NYC happened to be one of those.Cake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYC

We had been walking all morning (we walked A LOT, but more on that later) and stumbled upon the legendary Katz’s Deli just as we were getting hungry. Taking that as a sign, we settled down for lunch. And god, what a good idea we had then!Cake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCCake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCCake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCNeon signs and loads of happy customers welcomed us in. It was still relatively early in the day (I blame jetlag for our unusual lunchbreak timings!), but the restaurants was positively busy already!Cake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCCake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCCake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCWe grabbed a couples of drinks to try out while reading the (extensive) menu…Cake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCThe kitchen team is amongst the nicest we’ve met in NYC and will happily let you try anything. I think it’s meant to help you make your decision, but I’m not sure it really helped me as everything was absolutely delicious!Cake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCCake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCHaving taken a peek over neighbouring tables’ plates, we finally settled for the (gigantic) Reuben sandwich with fresh & pickled gerkins. Cake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCCake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCNot only did it look epic but the meat was seriously smokey and very more-ish. The accompanying pickles freshened the whole thing up quite nicely. All in all, a beautiful beast of a sandwich and one of the best I’ve ever had!

Cake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYCAnd me? Oh, just like every other time I eat a gigantic sandwich, I was a true lady! 😂Cake + Whisky | Katz's Deli NYC

What? The best sandwich I’ve ever had (Reubens on Rye).

Why? Katz’s Deli is an institution for a reason. It’s a no-nonsense, cash-only sort of place, but they definitely know their way with meat.

How much? About $20 for two with drinks. Portions sizes are GIGANTIC, so you’ll have more than enough if you share, which makes it one of the best deals I’ve ever came accross!
