Brunch at Market Restaurant, Camden

In my world, Saturday is brunch day.

Luckily, there’s no shortage of fantastic places for this in London.

The latest of my discoveries is Market restaurant, a lovely no-nonsense farm-to-table little place right by Camden Town station.

It’s a small, cosy restaurant with blasted brick walls, zinc-topped tables & an open kitchen that knows it’s way ’round the brunch classics.

Starting with loads of tea (and a little bit of coffee).

Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on (remarquably excellent) toast.

Salt beef hash with fried duck egg and caramelised onions.

Incredibly fluffy buttermilk pancakes with hot berry mix, vanilla crème fraiche and maple syrup.

There were also Eggs Florentine thrown in somewhere, but it looks like I didn’t manage to capture them in all their glorious simplicity!

With quality, wholesome food made using the freshest seasonal produce, Market restaurant is absolutely the place, and no matter what you choose from the short but perfectly formed brunch menu, you’ll be in for an egg-ceptional start to the day!

You might want to book a table though, as it’s quite small and (unsurprisingly) fills up quickly!

Race you there? 3…2…1… BRUNCH!

KERB Camden Highlights

About a month and a half ago, the company I work for moved its offices to Camden for the Summer, and it didn’t take me long to start grumbling about the limited amount of choice available when it comes to non-deep-fried lunch options around.

But the London food gods must have heard my prayers, and they brought KERB to Camden.

One thing everyone should get for sure is a portion of Oli Baba’s irresistible halloumi fries.

A taste of Italy at Rossopomodoro

When the moon hits the sky like a big pizza pie, that’s amore.

And also a pretty clear clue that you should gather your girlfriends for a lil’ pizza-n-catch-up party of your own.

Luckily, I know just the place…

Nestled in the heart of Jamestown Road (Camden’s ever-extending foodie destination), right opposite Mildred’s, Rossopomodoro is a little slice of Italian heaven.

Rossopomodoro, Camden | Cake + Whisky

Pizza, pasta, bruschetta, they serve up all the classics and, crust me on that, some of the best pizza this side of Naples!

We started off with the holy trinity of Italian ‘primi’:

Rossopomodoro, Camden | Cake + Whisky

Arancini – stuffed risotto balls, coated with breadcrumbs and deep fried.

Calamaro fritti – crisp, more-ish fried calamari and courgettes with a lemon dressing.

And the star of the show, Bruschetta.

Topped with spicy N’Duja and creamy buffalo ricotta, those were a pretty special treat and disappeared far too quickly.

Luckily, it didn’t take long before pizza replaced the empty plates!

The Indecisa: A three-in-one pizza with three flavours (Margherita with yellow datterini tomatoes; Smoked mozzarella, tomato sauce and spicy salami; Smoked mozzarella, Neapolitan sausage and Friarielli).

Perfect for those days when you simply can’t decide!

Cozze e Zucchini (Mozzarella, courgettes, mussels, lemon slices and chilli flakes).

A unique creation seafood lovers will…well, love!

And a bit of an unexpected one: the Uova e Guanciale.

Boasting smoked mozzarella, potatoes, mascarpone, eggs and crispy pork guanciale, it’s basically the love-child of Carbonara pasta & Pizza.

And incidently one of my favourite combinations ever.

We toasted to the beginning of rosé wine season, lost track of time and chatted late into the night.

Pizza + wine + your favourite people always make for the best nights out!

Mildred’s vegetarian restaurant, Camden

There are so many great new restaurants opening all the time in London that deciding to go back to an old favourite almost always feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity.

But sometimes, the planets align and one of said old favourites open a new restaurant themselves. And then it very much is your duty to go and check if it’s as good as the original (right?).

Especially when the new venue takes reservations!

So, after a walk through King’s Cross to see some of the installations for Lumière London, we made a beeline to the newly opened Mildred’s in Camden.

And it was love at first sight. I mean, you can’t really go wrong with warm wood and gold rose accent touches, can you?

It took us forever to choose…

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

Partly because of doing faces (not naming anyone, but that was Ophélie) and taking too many pictures (alright, that was all me!)…

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

But also because we simply wanted to try EVERYTHING!

We started with a round of cocktails (your fave vegetarian being in town is something to celebrate, right?)

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

The Bombay Cooler (rum, mint, lime, chai syrup).

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

The Bourbon Sours (bourbon, amaretto, lemon, sugar syrup)

And a (quite spicy) Bloody Mary. And chips.

And the BEST basil mayo there ever was (not pictured because I was far too busy inventing evil plans to keep it all to myself). I could happy have nibbled on those all evening.

But that didn’t quite happened. Instead, we kind of munched our way through most of the menu.

Starting with a few starters…

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

Including this Panfried halloumi with charcoal roasted peppers and leeks and chargrilled flatbread (excellent)

Rose harrisa hoummus, smokey babaganoush and chargrilled flatbread (always a crowd-pleaser)

Mains followed shortly after.

Sri Lankan sweet potato curry with roasted lime cashews, pea basmati rice and coconut-tomato sambal.

Polish burger (beetroot, white bean and dill in a focaccia bun with iceberg lettuce, mayonnaise, pickled cabbage, gherkin and cheese)

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

Classic burger (smoked tofu, lentils, piquillo pepper in a focaccia bun with relish, rocket, red onion, tomato and cheese)

And the dish of the night: Mock duck Cassoulet.

I was so curious to try a vegetarian version of cassoulet as it’s a dish that’s so reliant on meat and meaty fats in its original version and it did not disappoint!

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

Despite eating more than my share of yet more chips (#sorrynotsorry), we somehow manage to gather the necessary strength to have dessert.

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

Coconut panna cotta with salted caramel espresso sauce (just a little wobbly and absolutely divine)

Mildred's vegetarian restaurant, Camden | Cake + Whisky

Peanut butter brownies and vanilla ice cream (rich and dense, just as it should be)

And a little bit of extra indulgence with Maraschino cherry truffles to polish it all off.

And in the end, a very full belly and a massive smile on my face because this new Mildred’s restaurant IS just as good as the original. And I won’t have to queue ever again when I get a cravings for those basil-mayo drenched chips.
